APT - Advanced Persistent Threat - An organized threat actor, usually nation state or state sponsored, with the continuous goal of exploiting and breaching digital assets. APTs are dedicated criminal or nation enterprises with full-time committed resources with the long term goal of computer intrusion, exfiltration, and disruption of other companies, organizations, or countries.


Log - A record of events occurring within an organization’s systems and networks. Logs are composed of log entries; each entry contains information related to a specific event or transaction that has occurred within the system or network.


Phishing - A cyberattack where emails are crafted and sent to targets with malicious links, attachments, or instructions with the intent to compromise or exploit the target through their own actions.


PUA - Potentially Unwanted/Unauthorized Applications. Software installed (usually unintentionally) as part of a separate installation or bundle, often running unknown and consuming resources. This type of program is also known as Bloatware.


Security Incident - An occurrence that actually or potentially jeopardizes the confidentiality, integrity, or availability of information or supporting systems, constituting a violation of company policies, procedures, or acceptable use.


Smishing - Phishing attacks performed over text message, most commonly received by smartphone. The term smishing is an amalgamation of 'phishing' and SMS (Short Message Service), the official/technical term for text messaging.


Spear Phishing - A cyberattack where emails (phishes) are specifically crafted and sent to identified individuals with the intent on compromising the target's computer, identity, or information.


Watering Hole Attack - A cyberattack where a commonly visited website is infected with malware so targets will inadvertently execute the malware when they visit the site. 


Whaling - A variant of spear phishing, whaling is phishing attacks focused on very high value targets such as senior business leaders, politicians, or personas. Whaling usually includes masquerading or impersonating a senior official with the intent to compromise other senior officials. Also known as CEO Fraud.
